A Must Share for all Musicians: New Rating System for Airline Cabin Policy Published by Musicians’ Union

Musicians now have something to look into when traveling through airlines. Because of a new rating system published by The International Federation of Musicians.

To know which airline has more accommodating cabin policies for traveling musicians with instruments, a 3 tier rating system was published by The International Federation of Musicians.

According to the study, only 11 airlines were found to have set policies stating their acceptance to all musical instruments on board as long as they fit on the overhead compartments and under the seat.

In alphabetical order, the IFM awarded the highest “green” rating (highest grade) on the following airlines:

  • Air Canada
  • Air Dolomiti
  • Air Mauritius
  • American Airlines
  • Avianca
  • Brussels Airlines
  • Delta Airlines
  • El Al
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • JetBlue
  • Southwest Airlines

The “amber” rating was given to 29 airlines that currently do not comply with the entire regulations set by US FAA, but they have a more favorable size limitation for instruments compared to those implemented on regular cabin luggage.

Airlines included on “amber” ratings are the following:

  • Air New Zealand
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Easyjet
  • Japan Airlines
  • KLM
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Norwegian Airlines
  • Qantas
  • Thai Airways
  • United Airlines
  • US Airways
  • Virgin Australia

The “red” rating (lowest grade) were given to airlines that apply to musical instruments similar size limitation as to regular cabin luggage. So here are some of the airlines included under this particular rating:

  • Air Berlin
  • Air France
  • China Airlines
  • Emirates
  • Etihad Airways
  • Finnair
  • Icelandair
  • Korean Air
  • Lufthansa
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Turkish Airlines
